Metsä Group has officially inaugurated its expanded and modernised tissue mill in Mariestad, Sweden, following the completion of a major €370 million investment project that the company describes as one of the largest ever made in the European tissue industry. The inauguration ceremony was attended by representatives from Metsä Group, Metsä Tissue and external stakeholders.
The investment forms part of Metsä Group’s strategy to strengthen its tissue paper business in Europe and support the long-term development of the hygiene and tissue sector. Following the expansion, the Mariestad mill has doubled its annual production capacity to approximately 145,000 tonnes, increasing the availability of tissue products across the Scandinavian market.
“By strengthening local production, we improve availability, reduce supply chain risks and support our customers across Scandinavia, strengthening Metsä Tissue’s position as a trusted long-term partner to its customers,” said Sari Pajari-Sederholm, CEO of Metsä Tissue. The upgraded facility incorporates the latest tissue manufacturing technologies, including a new high-capacity tissue machine and three new converting lines dedicated to rolled and folded tissue products.
The investment enables more efficient production of tissue products sold under well-known brands including Lambi, Serla and Katrin.
In addition to increasing production capacity, the project was designed to improve environmental performance. Metsä Group stated that the new technologies significantly enhance energy efficiency, reduce water consumption and lower emissions per tonne of tissue produced.
“With the Mariestad mill, we are setting a new benchmark for modern tissue production in Europe. This investment combines high-quality tissue paper products, efficient production and improved environmental performance – all built close to our customers,” said Jussi Vanhanen, President and CEO of Metsä Group.
The Mariestad mill manufactures tissue products for both consumer and professional hygiene applications. Although the expanded facility began operations during autumn 2025, the company confirmed that the site is now fully operational and positioned to support future growth within Metsä Tissue’s business.
The investment further strengthens Metsä Group’s position in the Nordic tissue market while supporting local production and supply chain resilience across the region.
