Marcal Paper announced the acquisition of the St. Catharines Tissue Mill in Ontario, Canada, strengthening the company’s position in the premium tissue and specialty paper markets. The facility, previously owned by BiOrigin Specialty Products, produces premium Through-Air-Dried (TAD) tissue parent rolls used in both At-Home and Away-From-Home tissue products, alongside a portfolio of specialty paper grades. Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.
Founded in 1912, the St. Catharines mill is one of the longest-established papermaking operations in North America and has built a strong reputation in premium tissue manufacturing.
Expanding premium tissue capabilities
According to Marcal, the acquisition supports the company’s strategy to expand its premium tissue platform while adding experienced operational expertise and specialty paper capabilities. “St. Catharines is a remarkable asset with a remarkable team behind it,” said Rob Baron, CEO of Marcal. “Adding the complementary mill to our platform is a natural step for Marcal — it strengthens our ability to deliver the premium tissue products our customers expect, while bringing in a deeply experienced workforce and a specialty paper business with a long heritage of innovation.”
Baron added that Marcal intends to continue investing in the future development of the mill and its operations.
Historic papermaking operations
The St. Catharines mill manufactures high-quality TAD parent rolls used for premium bath tissue and paper towel products, serving both consumer and professional hygiene markets. Marcal also confirmed that employees at the facility, including members of the Independent Paper Workers (IPW) Union, Unit 124, will become part of the Marcal organisation.
“Marcal and St. Catharines each have a storied history in papermaking and as anchors of our respective communities. We’re pleased to count the dedicated team members of the St. Catharines mill into the Marcal family,” Baron stated.
Marcal’s manufacturing network
Headquartered in Elmwood Park, New Jersey, Marcal has operated in the tissue industry for approximately 90 years and currently manages nine facilities across the United States.
The acquisition further expands the company’s manufacturing footprint and strengthens its capabilities in premium tissue production and specialty paper manufacturing.
