Lucart presents its 20th Sustainability Report

Lucart, the multinational paper group, presented its 20th Sustainability Report  at the National Museum of Science and Technology “Leonardo da Vinci” in Milan, Italy. Titled “Our Vision Lights Up the Future”, this anniversary edition marks two decades of Lucart’s solid commitment to environmental, social, and economic sustainability, charting the company’s evolution long before sustainability became a mainstream global concern.

The event was moderated by journalist and environmental advocate Tessa Gelisio, and featured interventions by Francesco Pasquini, Chief Executive Officer of Lucart; Daniela Bernacchi, Executive Director of UN Global Compact Network Italy; Michele Noera, Sustainability and Energy Transition Manager at Lucart; Valentina Polizzi, Regional Program Representative Manager at Save the Children Italy; and Ilaria Stellino, Italy Lead for Sustainable Solutions Group at ING Wholesale Banking. Special guest Alex Bellini, renowned explorer, shared his perspective on exploration as a dialogue between humans and nature, prompting reflections on the state of the planet.

New Resources and new governance for a more ambitious future

In 2024, Lucart completed a generational shift with the appointment of Francesco Pasquini as CEO, marking the transition to the Group’s third generation of leadership. The company’s governance structure was further strengthened by the entry of the Azzurra Capital fund into the holding company’s capital.

The Tuscany-headquartered group closed the year with a turnover of EUR 685 million, consolidating its position as a European leader in recycled tissue paper production and sustainable hygiene solutions. These results reflect the success of previously implemented investments in plants and organizational structure, supporting revenue performance in line with strategic objectives.

“This twentieth Report is not just a review of our performance, but a key milestone in a long journey made of courage, consistency, and vision,” said Francesco Pasquini, CEO of Lucart. “Over twenty years, we have built an innovative and sustainable industrial model that combines quality, competitiveness, and care for people and the environment. Today, with the support of Azzurra Capital and renewed governance, we are equipped to accelerate our international expansion while remaining true to our founding values. The challenges are many, but we are ready to face them with the strength of a clear purpose: creating shared value for all our stakeholders.”

Tangible results for the planet

The results achieved in 2024 underscore Lucart’s consistent and progressive path, where sustainability is embedded within the Group’s strategy as a driver for long-term, resilient growth. The company met ahead of schedule the 2030 target of 90% waste recovery, and completed ISO 45001 certification across 100% of its facilities, one year earlier than planned. Lucart also made further environmental strides:

  • CO₂ emissions dropped to 387.53 kg CO₂e per ton of paper produced, down from 401.27 in 2023 (-3.43%).
  • Water consumption fell to 9.43 m³ per ton, marking a -26.8% reduction compared to 2013, and nearing the 2025 target of 9.40.
  • Specific energy consumption decreased by 2.2% compared to 2023.

In terms of raw material usage, the Group achieved a mix of 46% virgin cellulose fibres and 54% paper for recycling, advancing toward its 2030 target of a 40/60 ratio. Positive results were also recorded in packaging: since 2020, 100% of Lucart packaging is recyclable or compostable, and 82% contains over 30% recycled content.

International recognitions and strategic commitments

For the third consecutive year, Lucart earned the Platinum rating from Ecovadis, placing it among the top 1% of companies worldwide in corporate social responsibility. Further strengthening its climate ambitions, Lucart joined the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) to develop a roadmap for reducing greenhouse gas emissions aligned with the latest scientific data. As part of this commitment, the Group will submit by the end of 2025 reduction targets for:

  • Scope 1 (direct emissions),
  • Scope 2 (indirect emissions from purchased energy),
  • Scope 3 (indirect emissions from its entire value chain).

A continuous Journey

In an increasingly complex geopolitical context and amid growing pressure for ecological transition, Lucart reaffirms its commitment to a circular and future-oriented business model. The publication of the 20th Sustainability Report marks a crucial milestone in a path that will continue with renewed strength, driven by the dedication of Lucart’s people and the fresh momentum brought by change.
