NCR Biochemical inaugurates its 150° Yankee cylinder treated with coating chemical package in January 2021

A long and satisfactory experience accompanied our journey through the interesting market of the creping additives since February 2009, when NCR Biochemical acquired the company Houghton European Paper Division (“inventor” of the modern well known coating technology) and developed it to create a unique and innovative package of Yankee coating additives.

To produce and apply successfully new technologies on a cylinder surface is always an exciting experience and thanks to the “state of the art” of our coating packages connected with our knowledge, we are proud of the achieved targets. Our aim is the focus into the performances, to support our customers to get profit from their production and collaborate with the tissue makers to find together the optimum compromise to smooth the problems and targeting our job to the excellence in terms of quality, machine runnability and costs reduction. That’s why the implementation and the research of new technologies is the base of our working attitude.

Our customers always dispose of the latest available best technologies and this is one of the reasons why we have registered worldwide a large amount of new brand names, to merge the innovations and the excellence distinguishing the quality as an absolute target to be focused. The new registered brands include the new series CYTREAT® and CYLUBE®, substituting the well know and successfully BIOFILM and BIOLUBE series. The new CYTREAT® and CYLUBE® brands include the actual formulations and the new formulations as well, created to perform over the standards where Yankee cylinders and tissue makers ask the maximal performances from the process.

In terms of performances the targets we focus on are mainly related to paper quality, production efficiency, energy and cost savings: excellent protection of the cylinder surface; best reaction of the coating package to production variations; paper sheet quality parameters at the highest targets; best crepe to stretch ratio (Image 1); increased bulk where required; higher stability to sheet moisture profile; very uniform sheet adhesion to the cylinder to minimize the drying energy, etc. etc.
These are the targets the customer is looking for and to get the optimum we collaborate with them becoming their partners more than suppliers. The collaboration is the key of the success for both, our customers and us, and pursuing this objective we can get the targets and be one of the world leaders in the chemicals production also for many other applications over the Yankee cylinder creping technology.

Considering the creping process, more than the other parts of the production chain, is the real section where the tissue sheet characteristics are determined and “created”, our activity become extremely important to produce tissue paper within the quality parameters required.

Those are the main parameters target of our activity in collaboration with tissue makers.
To get the results a wide range of specific products and coating packages is available and possible to be implemented on every machine/cycle. This large amount of chemicals packages, possessing different characteristics, are necessary because each production process is different from another due to a lot of variables driving and influencing the production.

A detailed map of the process, the NCR Biochemical “global approach”

NCR Biochemical activity is performed to study the productive process in all its parts, including many operating parameters. These investigations give us a clearer picture of the process and the exigences required from the cycle. Those, together an accurate image of the heat exchange on the whole cylinder surface (Image 2, 3) made through thermal scan, complete the package of information necessary to organise the proposal, to find the appropriate coating package and the adequate machine settings to meet the customer expectations. The specific accurate approach also helps in the determination of problems connected and allow our technicians to show to the customer the appropriate solution, made of a chemical approach and an overview all over the whole managing of creping tools and Yankee dryer operations, including: choice of the creping angles; creping blades selection; best pressure to be applied; choice of the ratio Yankee/hoods pression/temperatures; actions on the condensate extraction settings inside the Yankee.


Relying on a partner who, with customer same passion is able to take care of the cylinder, modulate products and dosages, modelling them to the specific needs of the paper machine, means producing paper with constant quality, without waste which obtain and keep the required characteristics. Moreover the production is carried out without stops or problems and the mechanical interventions on the cylinder (rectifications, grinding, metallizing operations) expand over the time, also allowing considerable cost savings and therefore greater profits for the customer. The sum of these activities generates quality and return of investment for our customers; this is what is needed to excel at every level, particularly in the tight and difficult market competition.
