Background
The European tissue manufacturer had been running ceramic creping blades from another supplier on both TM1, a single-width machine, and TM2, a double-width machine. While the blades were performing reasonably well, the mill expressed dissatisfaction with the level of support and service they were receiving from their supplier.
Kadant had already enjoyed a positive working relationship with this tissue producer, having supplied spare parts for their Yankee doctors and other equipment. Recognising an opportunity to provide value beyond doctoring solution spare parts, Kadant proposed a trial of the CeraEdge™ L creping blade on both tissue machines, backed by full technical and service support. The mill welcomed the proposal and the trial was carried out successfully.
- TM1 Results: Run times doubled with the same high-quality tissue achieved.
- TM2 Results: Run times exceeded the incumbent supplier’s ceramic doctor blades by over 50%, with equal tissue quality.
The CeraEdge™ L creping blade is designed for tissue applications that require extended blade life, high productivity, asset utilisation and tons per day output. This blade features a unique ceramic tip that provides thermal stability, reducing buckling, twisting and warping. The thermal spray parameters are optimised to produce low-stress coatings that are more robust and resistant to chipping, resulting in longer blade life and reduced production downtime.
There is less dust and linting than traditional ceramic doctor blades, and the CeraEdge™ L creping blade consistently produces a high crepe count and improves sheet softness.

Decision to switch
Impressed by the performance and consistent quality, the European tissue manufacturer is now in the process of switching from their previous supplier to Kadant CeraEdge™ L creping blades for both machines.
The decision was driven not only by blade performance but also by Kadant’s commitment to comprehensive mill support:
- Technical expertise and ongoing support from Kadant’s UK technical services team to optimise creping performance and blade life.
- On-site service with prompt and professional assistance from the technical services team for blade changes, troubleshooting and operational advice.
- Future collaboration plans are underway to conduct water system audits
and evaluate doctoring systems in the forming and press sections to further enhance mill efficiency.
A strong partnership for the future
Kadant’s close collaboration, consistent results, and proactive approach have solidified its role as a trusted partner with the tissue manufacturer.
With CeraEdge™ L creping blades now delivering longer life and consistent tissue quality, the mill is well-positioned to improve operational efficiency and reduce overall costs.
“This project demonstrates how the right technology, combined with the right support, can deliver measurable gains in both performance and value. We’re excited to continue building on this success with the European tissue producer.” states Kadant UK technical services team.
