Driving energy diversification inthe paper industry

It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.

The Stratoflame Hybrid Electric burner combines combustion performance with renewable electric integration for maximum flexibility.

The Stratoflame Hybrid Electric burner combines combustion performance with renewable electric integration for maximum flexibility.

Mevas has accelerated its commitment to energy diversification in the paper industry, not only through the modular integration of different fuels but also through the complex combination of traditional energy sources, heat recovery and renewable-based electric power.
The aim of the latest R&D innovations is to provide clients with state-of-the-art drying technologies that meet the highest standards of energy efficiency and sustainability. Yet this is simply our essence.
The greatest challenge we face today is ensuring our products adapt to an energy landscape that evolves at incredible speed.
Our clients can rely on systems designed to remain highly adaptable and high performing in every configuration.

Stratoflame Hybrid Electric (HE) is the perfect example of the energy resilience Mevas is constantly striving for. It combines the unique flexibility and combustion performance of the Mevas burner with the opportunity for electrical integration.
Stratoflame HE not only maintains optimal performance across a wide range of fuels – such as natural gas, LPG, syngas, or hydrogen, which can be alternated or blended-but also integrates seamlessly with available electric power.

This flexibility in energy sources comes without layout complications. The modular design of the electric heater add-on perfectly complements Stratoflame’s fully customizable configuration, making it suitable for any existing plant layout. The percentage of electric integration can be defined according to available power or space, ensuring maximum adaptability.

The Stratoflame system during assembly and field installation, designed for hybrid fuel operation and high thermal efficiency.

Client’s requirements:

  • 4 MW burner power required (the current one operates with high excess air or poor CO-NOx emissions).
  • Variable amount of renewable electric power available.
  • Possibility of hydrogen use within the next 5 years.
  • Limited space: approx. 1700 mm length in a 1200 × 1200 mm duct.

Solution: Stratoflame 4 MW + Mevas gas station with full hydrogen predisposition + Phoenix Pro control panel + HE pack (electric heaters + sensors and controls) to generate up to 1.2 MW according to the space available.
Thanks to this solution, the client can rely on an innovative combustion system for the coming years without worrying about rapid changes in the energy landscape.

Steam Pack Electric (SPe) is a fully integrated and highly safe system for producing saturated steam through the modular combination of recovered exhaust heat and electric power.
Mevas developed this hybrid solution to maximize steam production by combining heat recovery with renewable electricity, thereby reducing – or even eliminating – the need for steam generated from traditional sources.
The main goal of the development was to integrate electric power with the outstanding energy recovery performance of the Mevas Steam Pack.
This result was made possible thanks to the system’s complete modularity. With advanced control and safety devices in place, the system ensures that all the energy from exhaust gases is used first and then supplements the recovered steam with the electric add-on.

Process data:

  • 6 tons/h of saturated steam – Yankee consumption.
  • Sufficient temperature and exhaust flow available in the process.
  • Significant amount of renewable electric
    power available.
  • Cost-effectiveness of electric power varying during the day.

Solution: Steam Pack Electric – 1300 kg/h of saturated steam generated from exhaust recovery (classic Steam Pack) + 4700 kg/h from renewables thanks to the electric boiler configuration.
This solution enables the client to combine fossil fuel and electricity to produce steam, choosing one or the other depending on the time of day, achieving significant cost savings and advancing sustainability goals.

Mevas Hybrid Solutions – Stratoflame HE and Steam Pack Electric – deliver multiple benefits. They generate substantial energy savings thanks to their intrinsic technical features and their ability to integrate recovered heat with electric power, combining, reducing, or even eliminating the use of traditional fuels.
At the same time, MEVAS helps clients achieve sustainability and environmental goals without compromising production targets – essential for maintaining profitable daily operations.
