The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) has expressed its support for the ongoing efforts by the U.S. government to tackle trade challenges with the European Union, particularly those related to non-tariff barriers.
Heidi Brock, President and CEO of AF&PA, commented on recent developments in U.S.-EU trade discussions: “We welcome the commitment shown by President Trump and his administration in advancing fair and balanced trade agreements with key global partners, including the European Union. Eliminating both tariff and non-tariff trade barriers is essential to supporting a strong and sustainable trade framework for the U.S. pulp, paper, packaging, and tissue industry.”
Among the most pressing concerns raised by the AF&PA is the European Union’s Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which the U.S. Trade Representative has identified as a significant non-tariff trade barrier. According to the association, the regulation poses a serious threat to U.S. exports, potentially jeopardizing over $3.5 billion in annual shipments of forest products to the EU.
Brock concluded: “We urge President Trump and his administration to continue engaging with the EU to address the unintended consequences of the EUDR. A fair and reciprocal trade relationship must include practical solutions that safeguard U.S. paper manufacturing while enhancing broader trade opportunities.”
