Paper suppliers introduce fuel and freight surcharges on US orders

Higher diesel and transport costs have prompted Sylvamo, Sustana, Billerud and Sappi to announce fuel or freight surcharges. The charges follow different schedules and applicability rules.

Sylvamo introduced US$1 per hundredweight, equivalent to US$20 per US short ton, on covered shipments from 1 October 2026. Orders received and acknowledged before 25 September are exempt.

Sustana announced US$20 per ton for all grades and formats shipped from 12 October. Billerud’s US$25-per-ton charge applies to relevant paper and paperboard orders with confirmed delivery dates from 1 November.

Sappi announced US$25 per ton on covered graphic paper deliveries from 6 November. Products include McCoy, Opus, Somerset, Flo, Private Label, EuroArt and Galerie.

Review conditions also differ: Sylvamo, Billerud and Sappi use diesel-price benchmarks, while Sustana plans weekly review.

Buyers need to verify product coverage, the applicable order, shipment or delivery date, any exemptions and how the charge appears in quotations and invoices. An earlier order date does not by itself guarantee exclusion.
