Domtar will indefinitely idle operations at its fluff pulp mill in Coosa Pines, Alabama, with the shutdown scheduled for May 2026. The decision follows ongoing challenges related to difficult market conditions and the ageing infrastructure of the facility, which have resulted in high operating and maintenance costs. These factors led the company to take what it described as a strategic measure aimed at improving overall efficiency.
Domtar will implement a structured process to ensure a safe and orderly wind-down of production activities. The company also confirmed its commitment to supporting employees, their families, and the local community during the transition, providing career transition assistance, benefits guidance, and continuous communication throughout the process.
Domtar is a major North American producer of diversified forest products, employing nearly 14,000 people across more than 60 locations. The company has an annual production capacity of approximately 7.2 million metric tons of pulp, paper, packaging, and tissue products, as well as around 3 billion board feet of lumber and other wood-based products. Domtar is privately owned by investor Jackson Wijaya.
