Cartiere Carrara presented, at the Auditorium Innovation Centre in Florence in Italy, the Sustainability Report for the 2024 financial year, drawn up for the first time according to the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS). The early adoption of this reporting model, provided for by the CSRD Directive, represents a significant step in the company’s path towards increasingly transparent and responsible management.
The document presents a picture made up of concrete results, in several areas. Turnover approached 500 million euros, with a generated value equal to 465 million. Production reached about 300 thousand tons of tissue paper. The workforce grew accordingly, recording an increase of 86 units during the year.
Also in environmental matters, 2024 marked significant progress: water withdrawal decreased by 8.6% compared to 2022, almost half of the waste produced was sent for recovery, and the total number of trees planted reached 14,185, as part of the reforestation project launched in 2020. Greenhouse gas emissions also decreased compared to the previous year, thanks to constant investment in plant efficiency and innovation.
This path originates from the Sustainability Manifesto that Cartiere Carrara adopted as a reference framework, a document that clearly set out the principles and objectives on which the company now measures its progress. The commitments written in that manifesto continue to guide strategic choices: reducing environmental impact, enhancing people, supporting the territory and innovating responsibly.
2024 was also the year of joining the United Nations Global Compact, which commits Cartiere Carrara to respecting universal principles regarding human rights, labour, environment and the fight against corruption.
The Report does not only take a snapshot of the results achieved, but clearly indicates the course for the coming years. Cartiere Carrara will continue to work to further reduce water consumption, increase energy supply from renewable sources and prepare a Decarbonization Plan in view of joining the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). At the same time, ESG criteria will be integrated into the processes of supplier selection and qualification, in order to promote an increasingly sustainable and transparent supply chain.
“With this report we wanted to present the results of 2024 and, at the same time, indicate the course for the coming years” – declared Mario Carrara, Vice President of Cartiere Carrara –. “For us, sustainability means concretely integrating all its dimensions: environmental, social and governance. It is a commitment that does not translate into statements of principle, but into measurable results, responsible investments and daily choices oriented towards the long term.”
The presentation event, moderated by the Deputy Director of Sky Tg24 Michele Cagiano, was attended by Professor Marco Frey, Coordinator of the Interdisciplinary Centre on Sustainability and Climate of the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna of Pisa and former President of the Global Compact Italy Foundation, by Gaetano Ievolella, Chief Executive Officer of Cartiere Carrara, by Cristiano Dutto, Quality and Sustainability Director, and by Roberto Raccanelli of the Climate Change and Sustainability Team of EY Italy, and was attended by more than 130 people, representing the company’s various stakeholders.
